According to a new report, there are only four other North American cities with higher average software engineer salaries than Denver. That’s according to San Francisco-based job search company Hired, which published its 2017 “Global State of Tech Salaries” report, indicating that the average annual salary for a Denver software engineer is $112,000, down 2.63% from a year earlier.

But when you factor in the adjusted cost for living compared with the Bay Area, Denver salaries adjust to $181,000, behind only Austin ($198,000) of the 10 North American cities that were ranked!

Our Why

CodingForKids

Parents and students often ask us why we do what we do. I always appreciate someone’s curiosity, and in this case, it’s a welcomed opportunity to not only explain ‘our why’ but to help inform about the rather dire STEM education gap that needs to be filled.

Understanding ‘our why’ begins by understanding that literally everything we do in our lives requires the use of some sort of technology…it is all around us…from the timing of the traffic lights, the air pressure sensor on my car, to my home scale that texts me if my weight fluctuates outside of pre-defined parameters…tech is all around us.

Silicon STEM Academy To Present At University of Denver Brain Rounds

February 22, DENVER – Silicon STEM Academy (SSA), a technical training company in Denver dedicated to teaching students of all ages computer programming, robotics, digital media and other technology skills, has announced that John Scarborough, co-founder and managing director, will present at the University of Denver Brain Rounds on Friday, February 24, 2017 beginning at 12:00PM. Brain Rounds are free monthly lectures in translational science focused on neurology, psychology, biology, and neuroscience.

Scarborough’s lecture, titled “In The Shadow of Geeks”, is a light-hearted lecture about his observations and research on our emerging tech generation, “Generation Z”, and how today’s tech-kid is innately more technically advanced than we could have realized.

“Most of us have had the experience of asking a young person for help with a computer or smart phone when we can’t figure something out…they are younger and just get-it,” said John Scarborough, co-founder of Silicon STEM Academy. “I’m really thrilled to be a part of the lecture series and to be able to share my experiences about teaching some of these remarkable students, and more importantly, what I’ve been able to learn from them.”

This lecture series is held once a month through May 2017 and are held at the Sturm Hall, in the Lindsay Auditorium at the University of Denver. See the Center for Professional Development or online for more details.

120 Years

The U.S. education system was designed over 100 years ago. Charles Eliot of Harvard initially created a framework in 1893 that was to evolve the one-room-schoolhouse into a factory-school model. Generally speaking, the intention was to train students to perform low-error routines destined for assembly-line jobs. This framework helped to lead the U.S. into an era of innovation, growth and prosperity.

We still operate an educational system today that’s based on the same outdated principles of rote memorization. But what are our students really learning and how prepared are they for the 21st century? After 120 years – it’s time for a change.

STEM Gap = JOB Gap

Kelly and I, along with long time colleagues and friends, Karen and Jeffrey Pearl, co-founded a Voice over Internet Protocol (“VoIP”) company in 2006…we launched when VoIP was very new and completely unrecognized as a business and cost advantage. We built the company for 6 years, made the Inc500 list 2 years, in the top 10 ‘Best Companies to Work’ for 4 years, and ultimately Denver’s ‘Fastest Growing Company’ in 2010.

Day Old Bread

I’ve always admired and appreciated how involved Kelly was with the schools that Evan and Christopher attended – she was on every PTO, every committee, and started more programs, enrichments and fundraisers than I can even count. I’m proud of her.

But no matter what school our kids go to – public, private, charter, at-home – they will always be taught ‘day-old’ technology because the pace of change in technology moves light years faster than any school system.

Our STEM challenge is real and it is now. Do not lull yourself into thinking that because your kiddo is going to a STEM school that it is somehow adequate.

Here are the facts on how Colorado compares to all 50 status in a recent report from Great Education Colorado:
