DENVER (Nov. 15, 2017) – As the technology sector continues to evolve, many companies are having difficulty finding qualified workers to fill in-demand, high-tech jobs. Expanding immediate access to computer science training is a statewide imperative to help continue to build our tech talent pool and fill critical job openings. Colorado Technology Association (CTA), Colorado Succeeds and Silicon STEM Academy have partnered on a $20,000 scholarship fund for 100 Colorado students statewide to jumpstart their future in tech through online coding classes.

“We know that students who learn computer science in high school are six times more likely to major in it, yet most Colorado schools do not offer computer science courses,” said Colorado Technology Foundation Executive Director Kelly Underell. “Colorado Technology Association and the Foundation are dedicated to elevating our state’s tech talent pipeline. This scholarship program is just one solution of a multi-pronged approach to increase computer science education in our state.”

Denver Software Engineers

According to a new report, there are only four other North American cities with higher average software engineer salaries than Denver. That’s according to San Francisco-based job search company Hired, which published its 2017 “Global State of Tech Salaries” report, indicating that the average annual salary for a Denver software engineer is $112,000, down 2.63% from a year earlier.

But when you factor in the adjusted cost for living compared with the Bay Area, Denver salaries adjust to $181,000, behind only Austin ($198,000) of the 10 North American cities that were ranked!

Are Robots Taking Our Jobs

robot robotic best stem classes denver

Robots are expected to create 15 million new jobs in the US over the next 10 years, as a direct result of automation and AI, the equivalent to 10% of the workforce. The downside: robots will also kill 25 million jobs over the same period. AI and automation is an area undergoing a seismic shift, just like computers did in the 1980s and plastics did 30 years before that.

Our Why

CodingForKids

Parents and students often ask us why we do what we do. I always appreciate someone’s curiosity, and in this case, it’s a welcomed opportunity to not only explain ‘our why’ but to help inform about the rather dire STEM education gap that needs to be filled.

Understanding ‘our why’ begins by understanding that literally everything we do in our lives requires the use of some sort of technology…it is all around us…from the timing of the traffic lights, the air pressure sensor on my car, to my home scale that texts me if my weight fluctuates outside of pre-defined parameters…tech is all around us.

Silicon STEM Academy To Present At University of Denver Brain Rounds

February 22, DENVER – Silicon STEM Academy (SSA), a technical training company in Denver dedicated to teaching students of all ages computer programming, robotics, digital media and other technology skills, has announced that John Scarborough, co-founder and managing director, will present at the University of Denver Brain Rounds on Friday, February 24, 2017 beginning at 12:00PM. Brain Rounds are free monthly lectures in translational science focused on neurology, psychology, biology, and neuroscience.

Scarborough’s lecture, titled “In The Shadow of Geeks”, is a light-hearted lecture about his observations and research on our emerging tech generation, “Generation Z”, and how today’s tech-kid is innately more technically advanced than we could have realized.

“Most of us have had the experience of asking a young person for help with a computer or smart phone when we can’t figure something out…they are younger and just get-it,” said John Scarborough, co-founder of Silicon STEM Academy. “I’m really thrilled to be a part of the lecture series and to be able to share my experiences about teaching some of these remarkable students, and more importantly, what I’ve been able to learn from them.”

This lecture series is held once a month through May 2017 and are held at the Sturm Hall, in the Lindsay Auditorium at the University of Denver. See the Center for Professional Development or online for more details.

If you listen closely as you walk into Denver’s Silicon STEM Academy in University Park, there’s hardly any racket of students or teachers pleading for quiet. Instead, you’ll hear the clicking of computer keyboards and the modest beeping of triggered circuit-board sensors, all amid the collaboration between instructor and pupil. “They’re here because they want to be here,” says Coding 101 Instructor Eileen Adair. “Here there’s no test, no quiz. They’re all here for the sake of learning.”
