Silicon STEM Academy is proud to partner with the University of Denver to provide professional development opportunities to the growing number of teachers interested in STEM topics. 

Through our collaboration, we will present opportunities for teachers, students, and professionals to acquire the knowledge and resources they need to integrate STEM subject matter and skills into their disciplines.  Together the University of Denver and Silicon Stem Academy will motivate and inspire teachers and students alike to thrive in an ever more STEM focused world.

Our goals and objectives are set far beyond theoretical discussion; let's roll up our sleeves and get to work.  These classes will provide you with hands-on authentic 21st Century skills that will help you in the classroom and/or workplace.

 

Coding was about problem solving, yes, but it also incorporated language. It was simply another way of communicating – telling the computer, (or in this case, Karel the dog) what to do.

Currently we are offering two ways for students, teachers, and professionals
to earn CEUs that carry credits from the University of Denver:
STEM CEU Certificates and STEM Workshops

STEM CEU Certificates

In order to earn a STEM CEU Certificate, which is worth five CEUs or 54 Professional Development Hours, teachers can choose 3 classes from any of the four STEM Pathways listed below:

Coding

Engineering

Digital Media

Mobile App Development

 

Coding Camp for adult students - Mobile App Development

To earn this certificate teachers, students, and professionals must complete three classes in any one of the three majors. All classes are taught twice weekly in the evenings, or in a flexible daytime schedule - and provide a total of 18 classroom hours each. IMPORTANT: In order to earn the STEM CEU Certificate with University of Denver credit, teachers must register through the University of Denver link that is provided.

From entrepreneurs to enthusiastic novices to small business owners to teachers and everywhere in between - we all have digital skills we wish we had. We need to know more about how to build a website, what programming language is best for us, what the heck is a 3D printer and SO MUCH MORE. But if we don't want to commit to an MBA - how do we get them?

LEARN TO CODE SERIES:
Which programming language is right for you?
March 18

Are you curious about the differences between programming languages, and why they have different applications? Have you ever wondered if programming is something you might want to pursue? This 5-hour workshop provides a hands-on opportunity to learn the basic principles of computer programming languages and their differences. Learn basic coding principles, such as syntax, if/else statements, and "for or while" loops. Then explore simple "Hello World" exercises in a variety of programming languages (Java, JavaScript and Python) and discover ways that you might build and run a program for your own use!

LEARN TO CODE SERIES:
Coding 101 Crash-Course
April 8

This 5-hour computer programming "crash-course" teaches some basic principles of computer programming. You'll learn coding essentials, such as syntax, code commenting, control structures and more using Stanford University's educational programming language, Karel. This workshop is a foundational stepping stone toward mastering more mainstream languages, such as Java, JavaScript and Python. If you've ever considered a career change to coding or just want to learn more about the world of programming – this workshop is your first step!

LEARN TO CODE SERIES:
Introduction to Arduino Programming
May 6

If you've ever wanted to figure out how to turn on your coffee maker with your smartphone, or create a moisture sensor for your house plants – here's your opportunity! This workshop will first introduce you to the emerging world of the Internet of Things (IoT) and how micro-controllers are increasingly embedded in the world around us. Then, learn how Arduino will change the way you live, work and play in the 21st century as you explore concepts of Arduino as an open-source programming language and hardware platform, also examining how it is used in microprocessors. Extra Lab Fee = $100, includes Sparkfun Inventors Kit.

BUSINESS BUILDER SERIES:
What type of website is best for your business
March 18

This workshop is for enthusiast and entrepreneurs who are looking to build, run and own their own website. You will learn the best practices in building and publishing an effective website, starting with basics: How can I secure my own URL? Where should I host my website? Then explore whether using an off-the-shelf web tool is right for you, or whether building your site from scratch may be better suited for your long-term needs. Search Engine basics and Google fundamentals are also covered so you know the important areas to cover when building your business.

Join us for this 5-hour Saturday workshop and discover how you can take your marketing to the next level in the digital age. Learn about web presence, social media, Google AdWords and e-Newsletters, and how to utilize them for your business or personal use. Photoshop for entrepreneurs and enthusiastic novices

Adobe Photoshop proficiency is essential for 21st century photographers— professionals and amateurs alike. And if you're using photography in your business marketing efforts (even if you're taking photos on a cell phone and loading them onto a website), you'll want to understand Photoshop, too. In this workshop, learn Photoshop basics including ways to crop, retouch and color correct your photos. Learn to resize your images or change their resolution for web or print use. The workshop will also introduce you to advanced techniques, like masking, merging images and working in layers. UNLEASH YOUR INNER GEEK SERIES:
Building and programming LEGO with the EV3 Module
March 18

Take your LEGO bot skills to the next level – whether you're a hobbyist or classroom teacher! In this workshop, certified STEM educators will train people who have experience with LEGO Mindstorms to transition from the "Brick" to the EV3. Start with already-built LEGO RangerBots, and discover how to connect the EV3 Module, with applications for both Mindstorms & LabVIEW software. Classroom teachers will also learn step-by-step instructions on how to take what they learn in our lab into their curriculum.

UNLEASH YOUR INNER GEEK SERIES:
Practical applications in 3D printing
April 8

By now, you've seen the wonder of 3D printing: if you can dream it, you can print it! But how might a 3D-printed object contribute unique functionality and creativity to robotics? Now's your chance to learn! STEM and industry professionals will provide an introduction to 3D modeling of mechanical components that can be used in robotics and other daily-use applications. During the workshop, you will design a simple structure and printed it. Extra Lab Fee = $25.

Build your own computer using Raspberry Pi
May 6

STEM and industry professionals will teach students how to design and build a working computer and browser using Raspberry Pi, that could serve as both a home-use device for enthusiasts, and/or a professional development experience for teachers who would like to do this demonstration in their own STEM classroom. Extra Lab Fee = $200 includes Raspberry Pi, Keyboard, Monitor, SD Card, Mouse. Student may supply their own materials.
